Hydrogeneration
Sail. Regenerate. Repeat. Oceanvolt makes self-sufficiency possible.
Regenerate energy while sailing
Oceanvolt’s electric motors turn your boat’s movement into renewable energy using a free-spinning propeller. This process charges your batteries automatically while sailing—quietly and efficiently.
Reduce reliance on fossil fuels
While not a complete replacement for a diesel generator in all conditions, hydrogeneration significantly cuts down fuel use by providing clean energy for onboard systems and propulsion.
Extend your cruising range
Generate power under sail to support longer passages. With the ability to recharge while moving, Oceanvolt systems support more self-sufficient, sustainable sailing.

What is hydrogeneration?
Hydrogeneration—also known as hydro-regeneration—is the process of generating electricity while sailing. By converting kinetic energy from a moving sailboat into electrical energy, this innovative feature allows sailors to charge their batteries simply by sailing. No fossil fuels. No noise. Just clean, renewable power from the sea.
With Oceanvolt’s cutting-edge electric propulsion systems, hydrogeneration is not just a possibility—it’s a built-in feature. Our systems turn your sailboat into a silent, self-sustaining vessel, dramatically reducing your environmental footprint.

Oceanvolt’s hydrogeneration technology
All Oceanvolt electric motors come equipped with automatic hydrogeneration capabilities. Activating the regeneration mode is as simple as pressing a button on your Oceanvolt display for five seconds. The system will then begin producing power based on your current boat speed, RPM, and battery status—fully visible in real time.

ServoProp: The most advanced hydrogenerator on the market
At the heart of Oceanvolt’s hydrogeneration capabilities is the patented ServoProp system—a variable-pitch saildrive that redefines performance.
- 360-degree rotating blades for optimal pitch adjustment
- Software-controlled efficiency for maximum power output
- Feathering position for ultra-low drag while sailing
- Superior output:
- 1 kW at 7–8 knots
- 3 kW at 11–12 knots
- Up to 5 kW per drive at higher speeds
Compared to fixed or folding propellers, the ServoProp outperforms by a significant margin. This makes it the most powerful hydrogenerator available for electric sailboats today.

Why sailors love hydrogeneration
- Sustainable energy: Replace fossil-fuel generators with a clean, renewable alternative.
- Self-sufficient cruising: Generate enough power to run all electronics and propulsion systems.
- Silent operation: Enjoy the sound of the sea without engine noise.
- Infinite range: Sail with wind and regenerate electricity as you go.
Hydrogeneration is especially effective for catamarans and twin-motor installations, offering double the generation capacity thanks to higher average speeds and dual drives.

How it works in real conditions
Hydrogeneration performance depends on sailing conditions. It’s most efficient when sailing upwind at a True Wind Angle (TWA) of 60–90 degrees. Smooth seas and steady wind help optimize output. While heavy waves or light wind may reduce performance, even moderate conditions can yield significant power generation.
To get the most out of hydrogeneration:
- Maintain consistent boat speed
- Trim sails effectively
- Optimize heading for steady wind
