Garcia Yachts Exploration 45
10000NM and 1,5 year later, the first “go anywhere”-electric boat
The family and I had a dream to own a boat without any limitations. After extensive research we chose the Garcia Exploration 45. It is built rock solid but still a beauty. After another huge research in the field of electric motors, I came to the conclusion that I would go with Oceanvolt.
One of the clear benefits is that the system is a non-dangerous to touch 48V system. There is the possibility to go with a shaft drive and everything is controlled on a CAN bus network with the possibility to have multiple displays and throttle levers. Due to our no limitations attitude we have a generator onboard with dc-dc charging. This together with the standard diesel tanks gives us a range of 1700NM at 5.5kn as a hybrid.
Some of the more hidden advantages is the huge battery bank while in anchor and living onboard the boat. In ANEMIS we have an electrical stove, battery heated hot water, freezer, refrigerator, washing machine, water maker, dive compressor and much more. So, we have a power consuming boat. Our daily use is 8500W, our 1000W of solar tops up a part of this but we can easily stay at anchor for 3 days in over casted conditions. And due to the brilliant setup, it only takes a bit more than an hour to top up the batteries again.
We have proven that we have got the boat that can be off the grid for a long time. Last year we left Tenerife in November and we were living on the boat with all the luxury we would like. We didn’t go to shore or a marina before we were back in Holland end of May 6 months later. ANEMIS was 100% self-sufficient in energy the entire time.
The cooperation between Garcia and Oceanvolt has created our dreamboat.
ANEMIS is the first electric boat from Garcia and of course there have been some issues as with any new product/project. Oceanvolt has the possibility to connect online to our system to read out data and to make adjustments. It makes me feel safe when I am sailing in remote places with my family.
I hate limitations and together with Oceanvolt we for sure have seen the endless possibilities and advantages of electric propulsion. – Owner of Garcia Exploration 45, S/Y ANEMIS
The Garcia Yachts Exploration 45 was conceived by bluewater cruising guru Jimmy Cornell and designed to be a go-anywhere yacht. Cornell, the founder of the ARC, has logged over 200,000 cruising miles. His brief for Garcia, and designers Berret-Racoupeau, was to create both the ideal bluewater cruiser and a yacht rugged enough to take on the North West Passage.
“I wanted a strong, fast, comfortable, functional and easily handled boat perfectly suited for both high latitude and tropical sailing,” said Cornell, declaring the resulting Exploration 45: “as close as can be to my ideal long- distance cruising boat.”
